Geopolitics is the study of how political, economic and cultural factors shape the world. Learn why it really matters to you and how you can become more aware of it.
I saw the latest news this morning between US and China which led into a discussion between my peers and myself. Some of us had a lot to discuss on this topic and the others simply walked away out of boredom.
Similar to this, how many of us do the mistake of knowing or unknowingly ignoring geo-politics in their daily life, without realising how much they can miss out by avoiding this?
But first, what do we mean by geopolitics?
In layman terms, geopolitics is the study of how political, economic and cultural factors shape the world. It basically helps us understand the motivations, interests and actions of different players on the global stage. And helps us anticipate the possible consequences and implications of these actions for our lives and others.
For example, rise of China as a global power has opened up new markets and possibilities for many people around the world. However, it has also created tensions and competition with other countries, such as the United States, India and Australia. And in turn, these tensions can affect your access to resources, technology, information and networks that are essential for your growth and success.
Another example could be directly related to your basic rights too. Imagine if you live in a democratic country or community that values human rights and freedom, you may have a different opinion on issues like immigration, terrorism or climate change. But what if you are directly or indirectly dealing or interacting with someone who lives in an authoritarian country or community that prioritizes stability and security over freedom of speech? These implicit differences then lead into bigger misunderstandings or conflicts among people from different backgrounds and regions. (haven’t we all witnessed this at some point in our lives?)
Clearly there is a strong reason for us to be concerned about geopolitics!
So, the bigger question now is — how can you become more aware of geopolitics in your daily life?
Here are some tips:
Read and watch diverse sources of news and information.
To get a balanced and comprehensive view of geopolitics, you need to expose yourself to different perspectives and opinions. Try reading and watching news outlets from different countries and regions, such as BBC, CNN or DW. You can also take it further by following blogs, podcasts, YouTube videos or social media accounts that cover geopolitical topics from various angles.
Learn about history and culture of different countries and regions.
To understand the current geopolitical situation better, one of the best ways to make sense of it quickly is to know the historical and cultural background of different players and their issues. For example, Ukraine and Russia have a long history of what is happening between them today. All this and more, you can try reading books, articles or Wikipedia entries about the history and culture of different countries and regions. You can also watch documentaries, movies or TV shows that depict or explore these aspects.
Engage in dialogue and debate with people from different backgrounds and regions.
Easier said than done and we might find all excuses to cover ourselves up to not engage in geo-political conversations but to be able to develop your critical thinking skills, you need to interact with people who have different views and experiences than yours. And you can do this by joining online forums, groups or communities that discuss geopolitical topics. You can also participate in events, workshops or courses that offer opportunities for dialogue and debate on these topics.
In short, geopolitics is not just a subject for experts or academics. It is a reality that affects everyone in one way or another.
Be more aware of geopolitics in your daily life, enrich your knowledge, broaden your perspective, enhance your skills and so improve your well-being.
