Oscar Wilde once said,
“Consistency is the hallmark of the unimaginative.”
But we all know that being consistent is essential for achieving our goals in life.
So why do we find it so hard to stick to our plans and routines? Why do we lose motivation and give up on our dreams?
In this post, I will share with you some insights from my personal experience and from the people I have interacted with. I will also give you five of my tried and tested tips on how to stay consistent in life and achieve your goals.
Tip #1: Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome
How many times have you set a goal to lose weight or to eat healthy food and lost track of it after a while?
We all have done this at some point, and we often make excuses to justify our failure. But the real reason is that we are too obsessed with the outcome — the number of pounds shed, or the number of healthy meals consumed, etc. We forget to enjoy the process of improvement and growth that comes along the way. We don’t celebrate our small wins, but we wait for the big moment of success. And when that moment doesn’t come soon enough, we get frustrated and eventually quit. (Do you agree?)
The solution is to focus on the process, not the outcome. Enjoy the journey of becoming a better version of yourself. Celebrate your small wins and reward yourself for your efforts. This will keep you motivated and consistent in your plan.
Tip #2: Narrow Your Focus Down to One Thing at a Time
Another reason why we struggle with consistency is that we try to do too many things at once. We set multiple goals and create complex action plans. We overwhelm ourselves with too many tasks and deadlines. In the end, we are left with feeling stressed and exhausted and we lose sight of our priorities.
The solution is to narrow your focus down to one thing at a time. Prioritize your goals and break them down into manageable steps. Factor in any changes to your daily routines in your plan. This will help you stay focused and consistent in your routine.
Tip #3: Never Forget Your Why
Why did you start working on your plan in the first place? What is the purpose behind your goal? What is the vision that drives you? — these are the questions that you need to ask yourself every day. These are the questions that will keep you inspired and motivated when you face challenges and setbacks.
The solution is to never forget your why. Write down your reason for pursuing your goal on a paper or a whiteboard and place it somewhere you can see it every day. Make it concise and catchy, so it can remind you of your purpose and passion. This will help you stay consistent in your plan.
Tip #4: Maintain Discipline
Discipline is the key to consistency. Discipline means doing what you need to do, even when you don’t feel like doing it. Discipline means following your routine even when life gets in the way. Discipline means sticking to your plan even when you face obstacles and temptations.
The solution for being consistent is to maintain discipline. Create a routine that works for you and stick to it every day. Research says that any activity done continuously for 21 days becomes a habit for a person over time. Start with small habits that are easy to follow, then gradually add more tasks from your plan to your routine. This will help you build momentum and consistency in your plan.
Tip #5: Identify Which Areas You Want to Work On
We all want to improve ourselves in different aspects of our lives. But trying to work on everything at once is unrealistic and counterproductive. We end up spreading ourselves too thin and losing focus on what matters most.
The solution is to identify which areas you want to work on at one point of time. Choose 2–3 areas that are most important or relevant for your goal, such as health, career or relationships. Break them down into specific and measurable milestones that you can achieve in a given time frame. Then create a habit of working on them regularly.
With these tips, I hope you can recognize that being consistent is a process that takes time and effort, although it's not a rocket-science either!
You won’t achieve it overnight, but you will get there eventually if you keep working on it!
So, what are you waiting for? Get going with practicing at least one of these tips for the next 3 weeks and watch the results for yourself! (Don’t forget to let me know how you go with it! :))
